Travel

Below is some information on how to reach the University of Sheffield by train, plane, coach or car. For more travel advice, please see the University's information for visitors, and campus map.

    • By Train

      • Sheffield is well served by the rail network: check National Rail Enquiries for timetable details. Direct trains are available from London, Birmingham, Oxford, Bristol, Manchester, York, Durham, Edinburgh & Glasgow (etc). One change is required from Southampton, Cardiff, & Cambridge.

      • Direct services from London St Pancras leave at 25 and 55 minutes past the hour, taking 2hr 27 and 2hr 5mins, respectively.

      • Rail tickets can be expensive; by booking in advance you may be able to make substantial savings. Try the East Midlands trains website for advance tickets from London. Cheap tickets from Megatrain may also be available.

      • The SuperTram: The easiest way to get from the station to the University of Sheffield is on the SuperTram, which leaves from the far side of the station (i.e. the opposite side to the main concourse), in the direction of Malin Bridge. Tickets are bought from the conductor onboard, and a single ticket costs around £1.50.

    • The no. 120 bus goes from the Interchange (close to the station) to the University of Sheffield. Tickets are bought onboard, for around £1.40.

    • By Plane

      • The easiest way to get to Sheffield by air is via Manchester airport, which is the largest in the region, and which is served by many operators (e.g. Aer Lingus from Dublin and Cork; EasyJet from Belfast, Amsterdam, and Berlin, etc.)

      • There is an hourly direct train from Manchester airport to Sheffield, which takes 1hr 13min. Tickets cost around £25 for a return.

    • By Coach

    • National Express and Megabus offer services to Sheffield Coach Station. Bus no. 120 goes directly from the coach station to the University of Sheffield.

    • By Car

    • Sheffield is easily accessible by road: it is close to both the M1 and the A1(M). However, parking near the University is extremely limited (or non-existent!). There is a park-and-ride service linked to the University by the SuperTram.

Accommodation

Eating and Drinking

There are many good places to eat and drink close to the University. In the evenings, Glossop Road and West Street are usually quite lively.

    • Lunch options :

    • John's Van outside the Hicks building for good-value hot and cold rolls and snacks; the Pasty Shop in the SU; Coffee Revolution in the SU, or Jessop West Cafe near tram stop for light bites; or West Street for e.g. burritos, hot pork sandwiches etc.

    • Dinner options :

    • University Arms for pub food; a range of places on and around Glossop Rd and West St, including Chinese, Indian, Turkish, Italian, Nando's, Noodle Bars and Pizza Express.

    • Nightlife :

    • The University Arms serves a fine range of real ale, and is popular with post-grads and staff. West St is home to a number of pubs, bars and nightspots. Ask a local for more info on where to go, and where to avoid!
